Carpenter Ant Control in Nassau, Suffolk, New York City, Westchester and New Jersey.
In nature, carpenter ants help decompose fallen trees. Contrary to popular belief, carpenter ants don’t eat wood—they nest in it. Unfortunately, they are also happy to nest in any human-made wooden structure, as long as the wood has come into contact with moisture and is rotting. Carpenter ant-infected structures can include homes, porches, garages, telephone poles, barns, fences, and sheds.
Carpenter ants don’t restrict their nesting activities to deteriorating wood. As the colony grows, they will expand their nest in adjacent sound wood. Since a mature carpenter ant colony can contain 2,000 or more ants, that means a lot of ants foraging for food, and a lot of burrowing into any available wood.
Damage from carpenter ants may be cosmetic or structural, depending on the location of the wood they’re nesting in and the size of the colony (a mature colony takes three to six years to grow to a large population). However, early detection is the only way to prevent further damage and keep any cosmetic damage from becoming a costlier structural problem.
How can you tell if you have a carpenter ant issue or you need a termite extermination? The damage caused by carpenter ants is similar to damage caused by termites. If you don’t see the actual damage because it’s hidden, you may notice piles of wood shavings near the infested wood, hear faint rustling sounds, or see the insects themselves. Carpenter ants are ¼”-⅛” long, black, and have segmented bodies. Termites (also called “white ants”) have large heads, and their bodies are not segmented.
If you notice carpenter ants indoors during late winter/early spring (February/March), the nest is indoors. If you notice ants in your home during spring and summer (May/June), the nest is probably outdoors, and the ants are coming indoors to forage for food.
Early detection is crucial to prevent further damage. Biotech Termite & Pest Control’s carpenter ant exterminators are just a phone call away!
